Thought to date from 1624, the Old Wire Mill was the earliest of three wire mills operating in Thurgoland parish. The village was a centre for wire-drawing from the 17th century, producing cast steel wire for sewing machine needles, fish-hooks, springs and other products. The mill site is now a residential property on Old Mill Lane. A heritage trail passes through the area marking the sites of the village's industrial past.
