A village in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley. Thurgoland was historically part of the ancient parish of Silkstone. The village is remembered for the Huskar Pit disaster of 1838, when 26 children aged 7-17 drowned in the flooded mine, an event which helped lead to the Mines and Collieries Act 1842.
