Thurgoland/Holy Trinity Church

Holy Trinity Church

church

The present church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was consecrated on 8th August 1871. It is the third church built in the village - an earlier ruined chapel near Pule Hill was recorded in 1650, and a second church was built on the present site in 1843 on land given by Lord Wharncliffe. That church fell into decay by 1870 and the current building was erected. Designed by the leading Victorian architect George Edmund Street (who also designed the Royal Courts of Justice in London), the church is a fine example of Victorian Gothic style. The stained glass windows in the east end, lady chapel and baptistry were made by John Hardman & Co. Inside are the original font, marble pulpit and marble reredos, all designed by Street. The church is Grade II listed.

Holy Trinity Church was designed by George Edmund Street, the same architect who designed the Royal Courts of Justice in London. Consecrated on 8th August 1871, it replaced an earlier church from 1843 that had fallen into decay. The stained glass windows by John Hardman & Co and the marble pulpit are well worth seeing.
